Data as of Jun 9, 2026 · 710 rentals across 91 Michigan cities

Michigan is one of the most affordable rental markets in the country. A one-bedroom statewide runs about $1,218 a month, the median across the 427 one-beds in our data. The range is narrower than most states: the affluent Oakland County suburbs and Ann Arbor sit at the top, the older industrial cities at the bottom, and everywhere else in between. We use the median on purpose, and the per-city table below is where the real detail is.

How to read these numbers

“Typical” is the median across every unit we track in that city. The per-bedroom columns are the median for that floor plan, shown only once a city has at least three listed. We include cities with five or more live listings and leave out single rooms and senior housing. Everything refreshes when our data does (last updated Jun 9, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

What is the average rent in Michigan?

Across the state the median one-bedroom is about $1,218/mo, studios run ~$1,188, two-beds ~$1,475 and three-beds ~$1,900. We use the median, not the mean, so a few luxury buildings do not skew it. Michigan is one of the most affordable states we track, but rents still range from the industrial cities up to the Oakland County suburbs and Ann Arbor, so look at your city, not just the state.

How much is rent in metro Detroit versus the rest of Michigan?

It splits within metro Detroit itself: the affluent northern Oakland County suburbs (Royal Oak, Birmingham, Novi) are the pricier end, while Detroit proper and the older inner suburbs (Warren, Pontiac) are well below them. Outstate, Grand Rapids and Lansing sit in the middle, and the smaller industrial cities (Flint, Saginaw) are the cheapest.

Is Ann Arbor expensive compared to the rest of Michigan?

Yes. Ann Arbor is one of the priciest rental markets in the state because the University of Michigan keeps demand high year-round. If you want the area without the price, the nearby cities (Ypsilanti, and the Detroit suburbs to the east) are markedly cheaper.
