So instead of ranking by total rent, this guide ranks US cities by price per square foot, the truest read on how much actual living space your money buys.

How we measure value
For each city we take the median price per square foot across every apartment we track with a listed size, so a few oversized or tiny units cannot skew it. We include cities with at least eight listings that report square footage, and exclude single rooms and senior housing. Lower is better: it means more room for the same rent. Use it alongside the plain cheapest-cities rankings, the cheapest city and the best-value city are often not the same place. Refreshes with our data (last updated Jun 9, 2026).
